Inspired by personal work with autistic children and the pursuit for more knowledge, the research in this study contributes significant findings to the field of art and autism. In this book, the artworks and processes of autistic and typically developing students were compared and analyzed. Using a unit and lesson inspired by the bold shapes and colors found in the selected paintings of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the study analyzes the artwork produced by both typically developing and autistic students in kindergarten, first, and fourth grade. Throughout the study, research not only analyzes these similarities and differences, but also places a strong emphasis on answering why certain results occurred. This comprehensive approach does not isolate the findings of each grade level, but goes on to examine patterns and themes that emerge across the grade levels. In the following chapters, the researcher s methods and motivation are detailed. The results are carefully analyzed and important conclusions that affect educators in every field are explained.

This book explores discourses on disability, social identity, and autism through an examination of the artwork of three boys diagnosed with autism. The author draws on her experiences as an art teacher and artist to inquire into how these three boys are defined by autism, and within this examine the frames that are used to understand autism and their being in the world. The author explores discourses on art, disability, and social interaction in understanding the ways in which autism is situated within other discourses of difference . Interwoven with these boys stories and her own, the author explores the pertinent issues revolving around the art of autistic students, and connects this to a more inclusive method of teaching all students. Through their artwork, the boys offer a counter-narrative of art, valorizing a different kind of meaning than that usually valued by teachers. The topics and content are pertinent to arts specialists, special education teachers, parents, and others who work with children experiencing autism.

Playfulness is important; it creates an alternative space where emotional, cognitive and social dimensions can be explored and tested. This highly practical book explores the endless possibilities of using playful, creative and interactive activities to meaningfully engage with children with multiple learning difficulties or autistic spectrum disorders. The author presents playfulness as 'an experimental frame of mind', and encourages practitioners to play with roles, ideas, words, concepts and objects in order to enhance relationships and interventions. By providing accessible steps to playfulness, this text explores some of the contemporary issues surrounding the education of children with severe learning needs, in particular the use of 'intensive interaction'. This text considers different areas of creative interactive work for practitioners to draw inspiration from, including: Music Interactive Musical Movement Finger Dance Story and Drama Artwork Reflective Circle. The varied array of tried and tested original activities have been devised to encourage the development of social interaction, cognition, play, experimentation and creativity, in particular but not exclusively, for children whose learning needs are more complex. The author also invites teachers working in mainstream, particularly early years and primary education, to investigate the creative possibilities inherent in playfulness and to use the activities in this book to enhance the learning environment. This text offers an abundance of advice, practical strategies and tips for teachers working in special and mainstream early years and primary education. Practitioners such as therapists, care workers, community musicians and creative arts specialists will also find this book useful.
